India-Egypt Relations:
In recent news, the Indian Prime Minister paid a visit to Egypt, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister since 1997. This visit aimed to strengthen bilateral relations between India and Egypt. Notably, the Government of Egypt bestowed the highest honor of the land, the Order of the Nile, upon the Indian Prime Minister. This honor recognizes invaluable services offered to Egypt or humanity.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi Pays Tribute to Indian Soldiers, he visited the Heliopolis War Cemetery in Cairo, Egypt, to pay his respects to the Indian soldiers who fought in World War 1 in Egypt and Palestine. The cemetery commemorates nearly 4,000 Indian soldiers, and Prime Minister Modi honored their sacrifice and contribution to history.
During the visit, a strategic partnership agreement was signed between India and Egypt, marking a significant milestone in their bilateral relationship. The strategic partnership encompasses political, defense and security, economic engagement, scientific and academic collaboration, and cultural and people-to-people contacts. Additionally, three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed, focusing on agriculture, archaeology and antiquities, and competition law.
Shorter Medical Course to Address Rural Doctor Shortage:
Addressing the chronic shortage of doctors in rural areas, the West Bengal Chief Minister proposed a shorter medical course for medical practitioners who would serve in primary health centers (PHCs) in rural regions. The three-year diploma course aims to provide first-level care in rural areas, complementing the regular MBBS course.
WHO Alert for Substandard Cough Syrups Produced in India:
The World Health Organization (WHO) raised concerns over substandard cough syrups produced in India. These syrups, linked to 300 child deaths, contained high levels of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol, posing health risks. As a result, WHO issued an alert for seven cough syrups produced in India. To ensure quality control, the country's Drugs Controller General mandated testing of cough syrups by specified labs before export.
Medicines Patent Pool Agreement for Leukaemia:
The Medicines Patent Pool (MPP), a United Nations-backed group, signed sub-licence agreements with three India-based companies. These agreements aim to make certain cancer drugs more accessible and affordable for patients. Specifically, the agreements allow the production of generic versions of Novartis' cancer treatment drug Nilotinib, primarily used for Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML), in several countries.
Global Liveability Index 2023:
The Economist Intelligence Unit released its 2023 report on the global liveability index, ranking cities based on their livability. Vienna, the capital of Austria, secured the top position as the most liveable city in 2023. Among Indian cities, New Delhi and Mumbai got the highest rank of 141, Chennai was placed at 144 followed by Ahmedabad, and Bengaluru which were at 147 and 148 respectively.
Kendra Sahitya Akademi Bal Sahitya Puraskar 2023:
Priya A S, an Indian author, received the prestigious Kendra Sahitya Akademi Bal Sahitya Puraskar 2023 in the Malayalam language. The award recognized her novel "Perumazhayathe Kunjithalukal," which depicts the resilience and unity of children from diverse backgrounds during the 2018 Kerala floods. Recovery of Stolen Chola-Era Idols:
The Tamil Nadu Police's Idol Wing CID (IW CID) achieved a significant breakthrough in recovering 16 antique idols stolen from Chola-era temples. With assistance from U.S. authorities, these idols were traced to museums and art galleries in the United States. The idols, including exquisite Chola-era bronzes, are set to be returned to their respective temples in Tamil Nadu [8].
