Japan's Fukushima Water Issue Sparks Global Concern 

The decision by Japan to release over a million tons of potentially radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear plant into the sea has sparked international apprehension, particularly from neighboring countries such as South Korea. The contaminated water was a result of the tragic 2011 earthquake and tsunami which led to a meltdown in the plant. Despite treatment via the Advanced Liquid Processing System, a radioactive hydrogen isotope known as tritium remains. Japan, citing a lack of storage space, plans to release this water into the ocean under the guidance of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) for Wheat and Rice 

Recent restrictions by the Food Corporation of India (FCI) on the quantity of wheat and rice available under the OMSS have led states to seek alternative procurement methods. The OMSS was designed to ensure the sale of surplus food grains, moderate prices, and enhance food security. This is facilitated through e-auctions for traders, bulk consumers, and retail chains. The current restrictions, therefore, represent a significant challenge for states aiming to achieve these goals.

Flagged off on 30 June 2023, the tournament sees participation from 24 teams, including foreign teams from Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh. This is the first time in 27 years that foreign teams have been included in this tournament, which symbolizes excellence, sportsmanship, and competitiveness in the field of sports. The Durand Cup, first held in 1888, is named after Mortimer Durand, the then Foreign Secretary in charge of India.

Conference on Classification Regulations and Advanced Naval Technologies in New Delhi
